When to Consider Arm Lift Surgery
If you meet the following conditions, you may be able to benefit from arm lift surgery:
- Showing excess skin that hangs from upper arms
- Arms are not proportional to body
- Self conscious about appearance of upper arms
Furthermore, the patient should be a healthy non-smoker who is capable of understanding the risks involved and making an educated decision. Arm lift surgery creates permanent scars on the inner part of your arm. They typically fade over time and become less noticeable, but they will always be present. For the right patient, this is not a serious concern. Many decide that they are willing to accept surgery scars in return for a more appealing shape in the upper arms.
The Arm Lift Procedure: How Brachioplasty Works
This is a relatively simple cosmetic procedure that involves an incision from the armpit area toward the elbow. It can be done under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Kluska may also perform arm liposuction to enhance the aesthetic results. A precise amount of skin is lifted and/or removed to produce a slimmer arm shape. Sutures are then placed to close the incisions and maintain the new shape.
Recovering from Arm Lift Surgery
After surgery the incisions will be wrapped in tape and gauze and a compression garment will be provided for you to wear during the recovery period. Because the arms need to stay elevated and movement is limited, recovery can be tedious after an arm lift. It may take 2 to 4 weeks to fully recover and you should expect some swelling and bruising. Medications will be prescribed to help you manage discomfort.
Possible Complications With Arm Lift / Brachioplasty
Changes in skin sensation and pigment are common. Swelling is also common and will gradually subside. Uncommon complications include infection and bleeding. Poor healing and scarring can occur after arm lift surgery and is more likely in smokers or patients with poor skin elasticity.
