Botox Cosmetic

Botox Cosmetic is a very popular anti-wrinkle treatment. At the Greensburg office of Dr. Kluska, we use Botox for the temporary correction of facial lines and wrinkles such as:

  • Glabellar lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crows Feet

Aside from these cosmetic purposes, Botox is used for several therapeutic treatments such as muscle spasms and hyperhidrosis.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is made with a miniscule amount of the botulinum toxin. When injected, the toxin blocks a chemical signal that travels from your nerves to your facial muscles. Those specific facial muscles then relax, allowing wrinkles to flatten out and disappear.

Botox works best on facial wrinkles and lines that are caused by muscle contraction. If your wrinkles are caused by loss of tissue volume, a wrinkle filler such as Sculptra, Restylane or Juvederm will be recommended.

What to Expect During Your Botox Procedure

Treatment with Botox typically requires just 15 minutes. When you come in for treatment, the doctor will identify the proper points of injection to treat your condition. A proper Botox dose will then be chosen, which will vary in different individuals. The targeted areas are cleansed and topical anesthetic is administered if necessary. Dr. Kluska then injects Botox beneath the skin in the areas chosen for wrinkle correction.

After Your Botox Procedure

No downtime is necessary with a Botox treatment. Most patients return to their normal routine immediately. However, you should remain upright for about 6 hours and avoid alcohol consumption. The results of Botox will gradually take effect in the days that follow your appointment. After 4 to 8 days, the appearance of your wrinkles will be significantly reduced.

Does Botox Have Any Side Effects?

There are documented side effects with Botox Cosmetic that every patient should know about before treatment. Adverse reactions can occur at the injection site such as bruising, redness or stinging. Other possible side effects include headache, fatigue, nausea, flu-like symptoms and droopy eyelid. If you are concerned about these effects, ask Dr. Kluska for more information.

Botox Alternatives

Alternative wrinkle treatments exist that may be used instead of Botox or in combination with Botox. Dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Juvederm and Restylane are common choices for filling in facial lines and creases. Laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels may also be recommended for wrinkle correction. Schedule a consultation and we can determine the best wrinkle treatment for you.
