Who Can Benefit From Breast Reduction?
A good candidate for breast reduction is bothered by her abnormally large breast size. Because of her large breasts, she may be self-conscious about her appearance or she may experience pain due to the added weight. Patients often say they experience back pain, irritation from bra straps or irritation in the crease below the breast. If you are suffering from any of these conditions, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery. Sometimes, if patients have this symptoms the procedure may be completely or partially covered by insurance.
How Breast Reduction Works
The breast reduction and breast lift are very similar procedures. They both involve an anchor-shaped incision (like an inverted T) that travels around the areola and extends down to the crease. Using liposuction and other techniques, Dr. Kluska removes fat, skin and glandular tissue from each side to reshape and elevate the breasts. Stitches close the incisions, which are then covered with gauze and tape.
The breast reduction can accomplish several objectives:
- Lifting of the breast
- Reduction in breast size and weight
- Reduces the size of the areola if necessary
- Improves firmness in the breasts
- Decreases neck and back pain associated with large breasts
Surgery requires about two to four hours of operating time, usually under general anesthesia.
What to Expect After Your Breast Reduction
Recovery time is roughly 1 – 2 weeks. You will be provided a special bra to wear during recovery and pain medications can be prescribed to manage discomfort. In some cases, special drains may need to be placed to remove fluid that accumulates after surgery, and they will be removed in a few days. It is common to experience some aching, swelling and bruising. You may also experience some temporary loss of feeling in the breasts due to the swelling.
Breast Reduction Risks
All surgery carries a risk of complications. With breast reduction, possible complications include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, reaction to anesthesia, asymmetrical results, and permanent changes in sensation in the breasts or nipples. Ask Dr. Kluska for more information if you are concerned about breast reduction complications.
