Procedures in vaginal rejuvenation are becoming popular as more people become aware of specialized surgery techniques. One such technique is labiaplasty, a procedure performed on the labia minora. The goals of labiaplasty are as follows:
- Make the labia minora more symmetrical
- Reduce labia elongation or irregular shape
- Improve patient self-confidence
Candidate Selection for Labiaplasty
Women who choose to undergo labiaplasty are bothered by enlarged or irregular labia on one or both sides. It is natural for the labia to protrude, but the extent of the protrusion varies. Elongated or irregular labia can cause problems related to hygiene, clothing or sexual intercourse. For some women, it may also be unsatisfactory for cosmetic reasons.
How Labiaplasty Surgery is Performed
Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure that requires about 1 to 2 hours of operating time. It can be done under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Kluska removes excess tissue and places absorbable sutures to maintain the new contour.
You will be sent home with special instructions for post-operative care. Discomfort can be managed with pain medications. Exercise or sexual intercourse will need to be postponed for about 4 weeks. Some swelling may occur, which should resolve within 2 weeks. It may take some time to fully appreciate the results of labiaplasty.
Risks and Possible Complications of Labiaplasty
All surgical procedures carry a risk for complications or unsatisfactory results. With labiaplasty, risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, prolonged swelling and asymmetry. There could be a need for revision surgery in such cases. If you are concerned about complications, make sure you ask Dr. Kluska for more information during your consultation.
