Which patients are the best candidates for liposuction?
Liposuction is for body slimming and body contouring; it is not designed for weight loss. Therefore, if you are obese it is best to undergo regular diet and exercise so you can reach a stable body weight.
Candidates will also meet the following conditions:
- Persistent fat deposits in one or more body areas
- Adequate skin elasticity
- In generally good health
- Capable of understanding cosmetic surgery risks
How Liposuction is Done
At our cosmetic surgery center in Greensburg, a typical liposuction procedure will require anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours operating time. When a small amount of fat is removed, local anesthesia is used. For large volume fat removal, general anesthesia is typically required.
Dr. Kluska makes small incisions near the targeted areas. The fat is saturated with tumescent solution, a fluid that firms up the fat for more precise removal. It also contains anesthetic to help control discomfort. A thin tube called a liposuction cannula is inserted to dislodge and vacuum out the fat. Meanwhile, intravenous fluids will be administered to replace fluids that are removed during surgery.
What areas can be treated with liposuction?
Common treatment areas include the back, abdomen, waist, chest, arms, neck, thighs, knees, ankles, and more.
After Liposuction: Your Recovery and Results
Assuming you have adequate skin elasticity, your skin will shrink to match the new body contour. To aid this process, Dr. Kluska provides a special elastic garment to wear during your recovery. Recovery time will vary with each patient but it is prudent to expect 1 to 2 weeks of downtime. Shortly after the procedure, you will be advised to walk around. Medications can be prescribed to help you manage any pain during this time. Some numbness, tingling and swelling should be expected.
After healing is complete and you are able to appreciate the results, remember that fat will not return to the treated area. To maintain your new body shape and proportion, you should initiate a regular exercise program and healthy diet.
Liposuction Risks and Possible Complications
The risks of liposuction increase when large volumes of fat are removed. Most localized treatments carry a relatively low risk for complications. Possible complications of liposuction include but are not limited to infection, irregular skin contour, delayed healing, clots, excessive fluid loss, lidocaine toxicity and damage to surrounding tissues.
