A neck lift can restore the angular qualities to your neck and lower face. When tissue begins to sag on your neck, the youthful qualities of the jaw become hidden. With facial procedures such as the neck lift or facial liposuction, we can correct these problems.
Aesthetic Goals of Neck Lift Surgery
Each neck lift is designed for a specific patient. In general, if you show any of these common signs of aging, the neck lift can improve your appearance.
- Sagging neck
- Excess skin in neck
- Folds or pockets of neck fat
- Loss of angularity in the jaw
The Right Candidates for Neck Lift Surgery
Most people who choose to undergo a neck lift are in the range of 40 to 60 years old. Like all surgical procedures, a neck lift is better suited for healthy patients who do not smoke. You should notify Dr. Kluska if you have high blood pressure, problems with blood clots, or a tendency to form prominent scars.
How Neck Lift Surgery Is Performed
There are several options for rejuvenating the neck area. Liposuction can remove fat deposits in the neck and below the chin to improve facial contour. These options are typically good choices for younger patients with good skin elasticity. Other patients may benefit from a procedure called platysmaplasty, during which the sagging platysma muscle is partly removed.
In some cases, loose skin and sagging tissue are the most significant problems. In such cases, the procedure would be very similar to a facelift. Incisions are placed near the ears and on each side of the neck. After separating the fat from the skin and underlying muscles, Dr. Kluska trims and tightens tissue as necessary. The skin is then re-draped and fixated with stitches.
After Your Neck Lift: What to Expect
You should plan for about 2 to 3 weeks of recovery time, when plenty of rest will be needed. After surgery, you will be sent home wrapped in a loose bandage designed to minimize swelling. Some numbness, bruising and puffiness is normal during this time. Keeping your head elevated will help minimize these effects. The neck lift incision scars will be hidden within the contour of your skin and they should gradually fade and flatten out. You may want to plan on wearing scarves or high-necked clothing for a period of time after surgery.
Neck Lift Risks and Possible Complications
Like all surgical procedures, a neck lift carries a risk of complications. Adverse events include but are not limited to infection, reaction to anesthesia, poor healing or results, nerve injury and hematoma. If you are concerned about these possibilities, be sure to ask about complications during your consultation.
