Restylane

Restylane is widely used for the correction of facial wrinkles and folds. For over a decade, this product has been offered by plastic surgeons in North America and more than 70 other countries. At our practice in Greensburg, we may recommend Restylane for treatment of these conditions:

  • Smile Lines / Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines / Oral commissures
  • Thin lips and lip lines

A wide variety of applications exist with Restylane besides those listed above. Facial contouring of the cheeks, chin and temples may also be performed by your plastic surgeon.

How Restylane Works

Restylane is made with stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA), a vital component of supple, healthy skin. In your tissue, HA acts as a cell protector, space filler and hydrator. When you inject Restylane beneath the skin, it combines with the naturally occurring HA in your tissue and binds with water, restoring volume to the affected area for 6 to 12 months.

What to Expect During Your Restylane Treatment

Before treatment, we will cleanse the area, administer a topical anesthetic or dental block and identify the proper points of injection. After the anesthetic has numbed the area, Restylane will be injected using a special technique. Once the product has been placed, the doctor may briefly massage the skin to ensure a smooth result.

After Your Restylane Treatment

The results will be immediately visible and no recovery time is necessary. During the first 24 hours, the treated area may feel fuller than expected. But this will subside quickly. You should avoid rigorous exercise, exposure to heat or sun and alcoholic beverages during this time. If you experience swelling, you may be advised to use an ice pack to keep it under control.

Your body will gradually break down the Restylane and clear it away. This process may take 4 months to one year, partly depending on what area(s) were treated. Many patients return for touch up injections to maintain an optimal wrinkle correction. Possible side effects with Restylane include redness, tenderness, firmness, bumps, swelling, itching, infection and discoloration. Most are mild or moderate in nature and last for 7 days or less. Ask Dr. Kluska for more information if you are concerned about Restylane side effects.
